Which Honeycomb Candy is Best?
What kind of honeycomb candy in Australia is the best type of honeycomb candy?
Have you ever tried honeycomb candy? Is it popular where you live? I haven’t seen it in the US, but it seems to be all over Australia.
We decided to have a family taste test of the most popular variations of honeycomb candy to determine which one is the best.
If you are interested in the results, keep reading.
A Little Background
The first time I went to Australia was in 2004 with my sister. We didn’t do much research and chose two Contiki tours. One was throughout New Zealand, and the other was through the Northern Territory in Australia.
We figured we would check out Sydney on our own, and that was all we had time for.
Our tour started and ended in Alice Springs (yes, like the chicken dish at Outback), and for some reason, we decided to tack on a few extra nights there.
It was probably a good idea, as my sister ended up with bronchitis, and I took her to the hospital in Alice Springs, and she was able to rest, but there is not much to do in Alice Springs. We saw it all, including taking a hot air balloon ride at sunrise and riding camels at sunset.
Every afternoon, we would walk into town, and I would check out the candy bars that we had never seen before. I had already bought and eaten all of the fruit we had never seen before, and I figured we could try one candy bar a day.
Violet Crumble
The Australian candy bar that I remember the most is Violet Crumble.
I had never had honeycomb before, much less chocolate-dipped honeycomb, and it was delicious.
Dylan’s Candy Bar had some, which I found when I lived in NYC, but the price was insane.
Once I talked about it with a co-worker who proclaimed that she loved the candy bar so much she planned to name her firstborn Violet Crumble.
I have yet to have a violet crumble since being here, but I did buy one for my family to have a taste test.
The kids haven’t tried honeycomb, so I am unsure what they will think.
I also got a Crunchie candy bar, as it looks like a cheaper version of the Violet Crumble, and to round out our taste test, a Honeycomb Kit Kat.
I thought about making my own using one of this recipe or maybe this one, but I will do that another time. We have enough honeycomb candy for now.
3 Honeycomb Candy Bars by Size
The Crunchie bar broke in half somewhere in transit.
Surprisingly, the other candy bars didn’t break.
I lined them up to see how they were different.
The Violet Crumble is bigger than the Crunchie and also made of darker chocolate. The crunchie looked like it had been exposed to air longer, but that was because it had broken.
I made the mistake of cutting them up before dinner as well.

Crunchie
We tried the Crunchie first.
As I said, the air had gotten in, and it was sticky. It was hard, and the honeycomb stuck to my teeth.
What stuck out the most to me was that it was overly sweet. Both kids liked it, of course, and Mark just said that it was good.
Violet Crumble
The violet crumble was softer and lighter.
I was hoping that the darker chocolate would make it less sweet, but it was definitely too sweet to eat much of.
I was glad that we were sharing.
There is a dark chocolate version, and I think if I ever buy another violet crumble, it will be that version. Mark liked this one better, but M and Z preferred the crunchie.
Honeycomb Kit Kat
I knew the Kit Kat would be different. It had the consistency of a regular Kit Kat with the aftertaste of super-sweet honey. Out of the 3, the kids said this one was their favorite. It was the easiest one to eat, but regular Kit Kats are better.
Conclusion: Which Honeycomb Candy is the Best?
My tastes have changed. Violet Crumbles and honeycomb in general are too sweet for me now.
Don’t worry. Because we are persistent, we have purchased bite-sized chocolate honeycomb and enjoy it every time, no matter the specialty shop it comes from. It seems less sweet than the prepackaged candy bars.
