Which Flavors of Tim Tams are the Best?
With so many flavors of Tim Tams on the grocery store shelves in Australia, how do you know which ones to buy?
Someone has to do the hard work of testing all of the Tim Tam flavors to make it easier for others to know which ones to try and which Tim Tam flavors to skip!
My family tried all of the available Tim Tam flavors and I recorded our thoughts.
It did take us a while to try all of the flavors, and we generally sampled 3 types at a time. Now, when a new flavor of Tim Tams is available, we generally pick it up to try so that we can compare them to our old favorites.

Original is usually the best, and the same rules apply when it comes to Tim Tams.
Sure, it is fun to eat a variety of flavors, but if you are short on cookie money, just buy the original Tim Tams.

Why Should We Try All of the Flavors of Tim Tams?
I don’t buy prepackaged cookies often.
Growing up, my mom rarely bought prepackaged cookies, but she often made cookies from scratch, and I do the same thing.
Tim Tams are the exception.
Maybe it is because they are known as Australian cookies and not something I can always have at home in the USA.
I tried my first Tim Tam when I visited Australia for the first time. While there are a lot of cookies on the grocery store shelves here, Tim Tams are THE cookie of Australia.
I believe I only tried the original kind on my first visit, but I had a friend mail me a few other types one year.
There are so many new Tim Tam flavors that I decided my family needed to do a taste test. They aren’t mad about it and often ask when we are going to do another taste test challenge.
While it is now possible to get Tim Tams in the US, there is more than 1 brand, and they do not taste the same. From the information I could find online, there are many different types of Arnott’s Tim Tams in Australia, and our goal is to try them all!
How Many Flavors of Tim Tams Are There?
It is hard to find the exact number as there are limited edition flavors, so the number changes, but that is what I found from 2020 to the present. This is going to be an ongoing post that I update as we try new flavors. Checkmarks are by the flavors that we have tried.
Except for the original, I am not adding the double-coated varieties.
There are enough flavors for us to try, but we can’t possibly add all of the double-coated ones in as well. Unfortunately, this is not a sponsored post.
In 2022, Tim Tams came out with a deluxe Tim Tams version and a Tim Tams Crafted Collection. To be honest, we aren’t sure how they compare to the original, as the Tim Tams crafted collection is the same as the original Tim Tams flavors. Of course, we will test them out and see if we need to try them all.
Also, I have not been able to find all of the Tim Tam flavors that I have seen online. Different stores carry different types, and I try to get the ones on sale.
Hopefully, we will be able to try as many of these as possible during our time in Australia.

Original Flavor, Salted Caramel, Honey with Cream
I decided we would try 3 at a time. First up: original, Murray River salted caramel and Manuka honey with cream.
The original Tim Tam flavor remains my absolute favorite. The cream inside is so delicious, and the other flavors do not compare with the taste or texture.
The salted caramel Tim Tam was slightly caramel-y and had a sticky filling of caramel mixed with cream. The kids said that this one was just okay, but it did not stop them from eating it.
The honey ones did not have a honey taste. The reviews I got were “not bad” and “good,” but they were not overwhelmingly anything.
The kids were just happy to have cookies.
In the end, the original flavor of Tim Tams, or what they called chocolate, was the clear winner.
Dark Chocolate, Dark Chocolate Chili, Strawberries and Cream
Taste test day 2 included dark chocolate, Sunshine Coast strawberries and cream, and dark chocolate chili.
M, Z, and I all agreed that dark chocolate was the best, which was surprising. It has the same filling as the regular Tim Tams; the only difference is the dark chocolate outside.
M said that the strawberry ones tasted like ice cream. They tasted artificial and not like strawberries. I will keep these for special treats in their lunches. Surprisingly, these were Mark’s favorite of the bunch.
Mark had picked out the dark chocolate chili ones, and they were a special edition and were on sale. I thought they would be his favorite, but he said he did not really like them. He decided they needed to go in the fridge, and he has definitely been eating them. They were spicy, though the kids were not bothered by the level of spice, and both finished their half of a cookie.
Mango and Cream, Coffee and Chocolate, Salted Double Chocolate
Our third taste test challenge included Murray River salted double chocolate, Kensington Pride mango and cream, and Dimbulah Mountain Estate coffee and chocolate. The kids are excited when they see the Tim Tams come out.
We all liked the salted double chocolate, which was first.
M said, “It looks like there is a crystal in the middle.”
It felt like eating the original flavor with a small bite of caramel. It isn’t salty at all.
Mark liked the first bite better than the second, and he thinks that is because he had the caramel first. These ended up being his favorite of the group by default. Z gave them two thumbs up.
He only gave the mango ones one thumb up, while M declared them, “much better than the first ones.” Mark said you can definitely taste the mango, and it is a strong artificial mango flavor.
The kids were excited to see the coffee ones because they see me drink coffee daily, but they know they aren’t allowed to.
Mark declared them no good (but I did notice that another one disappeared from the packet).
M said, “They taste like coffee. I always knew what coffee tastes like.” She also said these were the worst ones.
Z declared these his favorite of the bunch.
To me, they taste like chocolate-covered espresso beans.
White Chocolate, Double Coat, Chocolate Raspberry
Tim Taste Challenge #4: white chocolate, double coat, chocolate raspberry
I was excited to try the double coat as the original is still my favorite, and I find it hard to go wrong with just adding more chocolate.
Even though I know they just add more chocolate to the outside, it tastes like there is more filling, which is the best part.
Mark said they just tasted like the original. Z said, “Yes!” and M said that they were okay. They are “in-between.”
I wasn’t expecting much from the white chocolate ones, as white chocolate is not my favorite. They were pretty sweet and just tasted like a white chocolate-covered hard cookie. M claimed these were her favorite and “better than all the ones we’ve tasted yet.”
Moreton Bay raspberry and dark chocolate had an artificial raspberry taste, but they are by far the best fruit-flavored Tim Tams that we have tried so far. These were Mark and Z’s favorite of the bunch. The raspberry flavor is a lot stronger than the chocolate.
Chewy Caramel, Chocolate Orange, Chocolate Mint
Tim Tam taste test #5 (and the last one, unless we start to find more limited-time flavors): chewy caramel, chocolate orange, chocolate mint
We started with the chocolate orange.
Mark and M rated it average, while Z said it was great.
He seems thrilled with any cookie that he is allowed to eat. I thought that these were the best of the fruit flavors by far.
This is the only fruit flavor I would consider purchasing again. I grew up in Florida, and these reminded me of something you would find at a visitor center or the orange grove shop.
We should have saved the mint Tim Tams for last, as it has the strongest flavor, but M wanted to try them next.
I was surprised when she said it was just okay, as mint is usually her absolute favorite flavor.
Mark and Z liked these the best, but I hated them.
I am not a mint lover, and I was hoping that these would taste like Girl Scout cookies. Thin mints are delicious, but these are nothing like them.
They taste like toothpaste.
Our last cookie of the night was chewy caramel.
I could hardly taste it after the mint cookie, so I had one just now.
It reminded me of a Twix candy bar.
While we all liked them, M ranked this one her favorite of the bunch, and now that I have tried them again, I agree.
Bonus Taste Tests!
As it seems, a new type of Tim Tam is released every so often. We try them out occasionally when we see a new type, but to be fair, nothing is ever as good as the original, unless of course, you eat the double-coated Tim Tam.
Banoffee Flavored Tim Tams
After a few months of not buying Tim Tams, I found out that a new flavor was released.
Arnott’s had a competition where people could vote for the next flavor of Tim Tams.
The choices were Caramelized Pineapple (my choice) and Dark Chocolate Banoffee, which was the winner.
I never knew what “banoffee” was. Is it a banana? Caramel? Cream? After trying these Tim Tams, I am pretty sure it is all 3.
I was surprised to see a white biscuit inside (though had I paid attention, I would have seen a white biscuit on the package). The only other Tim Tam flavors that have white biscuits are covered in white chocolate.
I didn’t get any caramel in my first bite, just banana cream. There is caramel in the center.
They have a strong banana smell.
My family enjoyed them, but I am not too sure how I feel about them.
We tried them last night, and I cut one open this morning for a photo, and I haven’t eaten it yet. I guess that shows how I feel about them. If I cut open an original Tim Tam, I couldn’t wait to eat it.
I tried to give the extra cookies to the kids last night, one night after our taste test, and they did not want them. My kids NEVER say no to dessert. We are not excited about these cookies.
After over a week, the Dark Chocolate banana Tim Tams are still in our pantry. It is a rare event not one person in the family wants to finish a box of cookies.
Eventually, I threw out the rest of the Dark Chocolate Banoffee Flavour Tim Tams. None of us wanted to eat them.
Tim Tam Deluxe Taste Test
In 2022, Tim Tams came out with 4 deluxe flavors that are supposed to be more decadent than the original flavors.
Decadent Triple Chocolate, Salted Caramel Brownie, Dark Chocolate Mint, and Dark Chocolate Raspberry Tart are now available in stores, but are they really different from the original, chewy caramel, chocolate mint, Morton Bay raspberry, and dark chocolate?
I purchased the Salted Caramel Brownie flavor as it is the only one that looks different than the original flavors.
To be honest, I am a bit disappointed.
My kids were excited to see the Tim Tams get opened, as they’ve been sitting in the cupboard for at least a month. One gave a thumbs up, and the other first graded them “a B, because the mint ones are better,” but then changed her answer to an A.
They’re fine, but I don’t want another.
It tastes like brownie batter, and I am the kind of person who likes brownies much more than the batter.
I don’t plan on eating another, but hopefully, someone in this house will, so they don’t end up in the bin like the Banoffee Tim Tams.
Butterscotch and Cream Flavour Tim Tams
A new flavor of Tim Tams came out in 2022, exclusive to Coles. This is another one of the winning Tim Tam flavors with 65% of the votes.
According to Arnott, the Butterscotch & Cream flavor has “rich brown sugar and toffee notes paired with a creamy blend of buttery smooth butterscotch cream, all coated in delicious milk chocolate.” I would say that is true.
Butterscotch & Cream Tim Tams are very sweet. The first bite didn’t have the caramel (or I guess, butterscotch), so it was a surprise in the second bite.
My family all enjoyed the Butterscotch & Cream Flavour, and I didn’t hate it, but it is not on my list of the best flavors of Tim Tams. I won’t be buying this flavor again.
That being said, my daughter asked for another, and that is more than any of us did with the Banoffee-flavored Tim Tams.
Coconut Cream Tim Tams
In June 2023, Arnott’s released its latest Tim Tam flavor and announced that it would only be available at Coles Supermarkets and Coles Express.
They are supposed to taste like Bounty bars, which makes sense as they are both chocolate and coconut.
It’s been a long time since we purchased any type of Tim Tams, most likely since the last flavor was released.
The whole family was excited to try the new coconut cream Tim Tams, but they were a bit of a disappointment.
Sure, the kids said they were good, but they haven’t asked for another one. They seem to forget we even have them.
To me, they kind of taste like sunscreen smells.
Sweet and Salty Tim Tams
Sweet and Salty Tim Tams, inspired by Jatz, started as an April Fool’s joke in 2024 and quickly became a reality.
Another Coles exclusive, Sweet and Salty, was released in April 2024 and doesn’t actually contain Jatz crackers.
We all liked this combination. It is almost like an original Tim Tam, though it has a saltier note.
Deluxe Cafe Latte
Mark brought home the Deluxe Cafe Latte Tim Tams in June 2024, thinking they were new, and it appears they are.
They have a distinct coffee flavor, and after the second bite, I reached the caramel center. The cafe lattes I drink don’t have caramel in them, but it isn’t bad in a cookie.
Iced Vovo
In 2026, Arnotts came out with a raspberry and coconut Iced Vovo Tim Tam, combining 2 well-known Aussie cookies.
The first bite of the Iced Vovo Tim Tam was delicious and immediately a contender for the best Tim Tam flavor. Unfortunately, the next few bites did not compare.
The middle is filled with raspberry jam, and the entire cookie is milk-chocolate coated with a coconut cream inside.
The Best Flavor of Tim Tam is…
For me, Regular and Double Coat are by far the best Tim Tam flavors due to their delicious taste and texture.
My runner-ups would include Chewy Caramel because it tastes like a Twix, and dark chocolate, as it has the same filling as the original.
The best favorite fruit-flavored Tim Tam is Chocolate Orange because it tastes the most authentic.
My absolute least favorite Tim Tam flavor is mint due to the strong toothpaste taste.
I thought it would be one of the white chocolate varieties, but the toothpaste taste is so overwhelming that I never want to eat another mint Tim Tam again.
The only Tim Tam flavor that we all agree not to ever buy again is Dark Chocolate Banoffee.
