Things to Do Outdoors in New York City in December
Go Ice Skating
At Rockefeller Center

A seasonal ice rink is put up at Rockefeller Center each year between November and March. You can purchase tickets in advance or show up and hope that there is an open spot.
General Admission tickets are available, as are VIP tickets, which include extra time on the rink, ice skate rental, priority service, and a hot beverage.
Skate time is 40-60 minutes long, and VIP tickets include 90 minutes on the rink.
The ice rink at Rockefeller Center is a famous place, and those who wish to have a special moment, such as an engagement, can book the rink with a special package.
Kids under 6 must have an adult with them on the ice. Kids 6-12 can skate alone. If their adult is not skating, they do not need to pay and can just watch.
Penguin skate helpers are available for kids 12 and under.
The ice rink at Rockefeller Center is ADA-compliant, and wheelchair users are welcome to participate.
Complimentary lockers are available, as bags are not allowed out on the ice.
Make your time extra special and rent out a chalet. You get 40 minutes for up to 6 guests. While food and drinks are not included, they are available, and there is a $25 per person minimum.
Lanie’s Tip: This location is famous, small, and can get crowded. If you can, book for a weekday afternoon. Those without kids should try to book a late-night session.
In Central Park

Wollman Rink, located in Central Park, changes with the seasons. During the winter months, Wollman Rink turns into an ice skating rink.
Ice skating runs from the end of October until mid-March in Central Park.
Adult ticket prices vary by peak hours, while children’s ticket prices remain the same. Season passes are available.
Lockers are available for a fee, as are food and drinks.
Lanie’s Tip: Wollman Rink at Central Park is larger than the other options for outdoor ice skating in December in New York. This is our favorite option.
Have you thought about having a photo shoot while you are in New York City? Check out NYC Photo Journeys to get matched with a professional photographer. You can book a photo shoot or even a private tour + photo shoot throughout the day.
