Brisbane Opal Museum with Kids Who Love Science
Did you know there is an entire museum in Brisbane dedicated to opals?
My 6-year-old is obsessed with all things science, and she especially loves her collection of rocks and gems.
Because of her, we added the Brisbane Opal Museum to our itinerary.
If you are wondering what it is like inside the Brisbane Opal Museum, keep reading.
Visiting the Brisbane Opal Museum

On our visit to the Brisbane Opal Museum, they only offered a self-guided tour, but now, you can also book a guided tour.
The woman who was working in the shop took us to the first room and started a movie for us. The movie was about 5 minutes long and explained the history of mining opals. Both kids wanted to watch it twice.
After the movie, we walked through a few rooms on our own, and instead of a tour guide, they had tablets set up with information.
My kids prefer to look at objects, not listen to the tablets. They just wandered around instead.
There is a 2nd movie inside the museum and a bunch of books about opals as well. It took us about an hour to get through the museum. If it were just me, I would have stayed less than 30 minutes.
The guided tour runs 30-45 minutes.
After the Tour
The staff was very nice and interacted with the children.
I saw a few people visit the store, but we were the only ones in the museum.
Little Miss 6 liked having someone to talk to about rocks and gems, and each kid was gifted one of those rocks to take home. I am sure there is a more technical term, but I do not know it.
According to the brochure, there is a “Gold Class Tour” option that includes an opal-cutting experience, and those rocks are what they use during the class.
The kids are very happy with their rocks and have been looking at them daily.
